South-east of the Delta lie varying landscapes of striking beauty. The Makgadikgadi and Nxai Salt Pans form the ancient remnants of a giant super lake once fed by the Okavango River system. The mineral rich vegetation attracts many grazers especially during the summer (rainfall) months. A sleepout on the dry pans during the African winter, quad bike adventures, habituated meerkat colonies and horse riding are some of the many unique opportunities for the explorer to enjoy in this area.
Around November each year, as the first rains arrive, the world’s second largest Zebra migration takes place in Botswana where thousands of animals start trekking south from their winter pastures in the Linyanti, Chobe, Savuti and Delta to the enjoy the rich grazing and natural water sources created by the rains in the Nxai/Makgadigadi region. They will spend the summer here, birthing their young and fortifying themselves before heading north again around April/May. At the same time as this north/south migration occurs, a similar one takes place moving east to west between the Boteti and the Makgadikgadi pans. During the dry winter between May and November thousands of animals converge on the Boteti River system where in good rainfall/flood years the Delta flood water may reach. In dry years the handful of safari camps in the area pump copious amounts of water to sustain the wildlife through the winter until the rains arrive once more and trigger their move east again.
